Revival of Titles in Free State Sparks Debate
In Dublin on March 16 the question of whether the Irish Free State should grant titles to distinguished citizens is argued but gains little support and a new titled class seems unlikely. Prior to independence Britain rewarded loyalists with titles, and Dublin was once nicknamed “The City of Dreadful Knights.” Some Irish feel titles reflect honor, while others see the system as a sham democracy.
