Law Permits Use Of Crushed Rock For Roads

Tama county board of supervisors approved surfacing 34.5 miles of roads under the road improvement program. Contracts were granted to Tama Sand & Gravel Co for 23.5 miles of gravel surfacing at $54,289 and Sargent & Sterk Co for 11 miles of crushed limestone at $27,379. The board debated legality of using bond proceeds for crushed rock and concluded such use does not affect bond validity, noting the Iowa Highway Commission treats gravel and crushed limestone similarly. Bids on both materials are expected to yield savings and widen competition.
