Governor W L Harding issues a proclamation setting seed corn prices in Iowa for 1918. Crib corn with high germination max $10 per bushel, other crib corn $4, and lower germination corn at lower prices. He urges fair distribution to aid soldiers and farmers, condemning price gouging and public auctions.
Des Moines reports a two day conference merging farmers groups into the United Farmers' Organizations of Iowa led by E. L. Nickel of Carlisle with about 200 attendees. They condemn the Greater Town association roads plan and disloyalty accusations, urging cooperative buying and state legislative action.
In Fort Dodge Indiana on March 14 H J Fowler and Carl A Peterson were elected to the school board succeeding Seth Thomas and S S Thompson. Free textbooks for Fort Dodge students carried by a big majority.
The jury in the state of Iowa v Thomas Sabroe found him guilty of assault with intent to inflict great bodily injury. Sabroe a Belle Plaine switchman, struck Lloyd Strachan with a lantern during October trouble, causing Strachan’s death. Trial lasted seven days and jurors were out all night. Sentencing not yet passed. Public interest was high with varied sentiment.
Ten Delaware county youths enlisted in the regular army last week and were forwarded to mustering points. Arthur West Lester Parkhurst and layman Smith head for Vamp Greene North Carolina. John McLane William MelLane Harold Ain Slaser Karl Trogers Khoy Lithie Charles Thing and George Cramer for Jefferson Barracks to join coast artillery. One registrant studied, registered, and was accepted in one day after exemption board actions. Perry Littlefield is apprehended by Waterloo police on indictment and will be tried on a serious charge in this term. Articles of incorporation filed for Town Mortgage company based in Manchester with EF Hoyt as president and George W Dunham as vice president.
Des Moines reports Gov. Harding and Federal Fuel Administrator Charles Webster traveled to Washington to urge the federal fuel administration to stop shutting Illinois and Kentucky coal from reaching Iowa towns. Officials say eastern states press to cut coal shipments would cause a fuel famine in Iowa, especially northern regions. Harding and Webster seek a ruling to prevent any shutdown of this coal supply.

Alton Louisiana March 14 Peter Steen stra Hull has pleaded guilty to the offense. court records show the defendant admitted guilt in a case tied to pro German sentiment during the period. The sentence is six months in jail with possible additional penalties to be determined.
A man named Steen-Stra was sentenced by Judge Wm. Hutchinson in Grange City to six months in jail and $300 plus costs after being found guilty of inciting hostility to the U.S. government. The indictment cited statements praising Germany and denigrating the United States, including, I would be willing to fight with Germany and I have more respect for Germany than for this country. He also told a man who bought liberty bonds, You’re a fool for buying a liberty bond. When asked his purpose in this country, he replied, Building money. Grinnell, March 14. In Osage, a bequest of $35,000 to Grinnell College was probated, with an additional large endowment to the Congregational church of Osage. Senator James A. Smith, former Grinnell College trustee, died Jan. 12 this year after serving since 1887.
Madison Wisconsin March 14 The state of Wisconsin announced it has disposed of 1200 acres of bottom lands north of Prairie du Chien to Iowa interests and will transfer ownership in a farm land sale.
