The Cedar River at this point sheds its winter cover aside from a small ice fragment near the water works as the city wakes to clear waters. Ice dealers, skating rink concerns, and municipal plans were left behind as the river flows free. Last year the ice melted on March 19.
The Wesleyan club of the First M E church held its annual banquet in the church parlors with 180 guests and their wives. A dinner followed by toast program featured C R Gates as toastmaster and performances by Sunday school orchestra harp solos by Bess Dawson two readings by Mr Cooper and Miss Genevieve Gates. Introductory address by A T Hurin and a main address by Prof C P Celgrove plus a final harp solo and a sermon titled Our Future by Rev W F Spry.
Five city prisoners under H E B Grifnow refused to work at city hall on Tuesday. Grifnow has been jailed previously and has not worked since last November. Seven prisoners served sentences while two refused to join, aiding street cleaning the past two days. The five strikers are in the dungeon fed bread and water. the two loyal prisoners get three meals daily. They will be held to finish sentences of two to fifteen days at hard labor.
Eugene W. Chafin, prohibition leader and former presidential candidate, tours Iowa under the state committee. He speaks at New Timbeton Aurora Oelwein Marshalltown Toledo Mt. Vernon Welton Muscatine Mt. Pleasant Fairfield Albia Waterloo Gladbrook and other venues. Oliver W. Stewart also plans appearances March 26 under the prohibition state committee.
The Glenflyon, a 2000 ton full rigged iron ship owned in Liverpool, sank off the Elbe mouth. Aboard were 36 crew members who were rescued. The ship had sailed from Mejillones, Chile, on November 11 with a cargo of nitrate.
