Proponents in Cedar Falls plan a poll on Sunday movie operation. No organization yet, but leaders seek a special election or inclusion in the March 25 municipal vote. Voter sentiment is being studied. a past vote nearly two to one defeated Sunday theater authorization.
Ralph W Gearhart of Cedar Rapids is hired as Buchanan county engineer after C Cox declines to seek another term. Gearhart, who began his career in Buchanan in 1914, has worked in Linn county Cedar Rapids and Chicago. Salary set at 2400 dollars annually.
David Shanks, 23, accused of killing Miss Jenna Constance, faces execution in Cook County's new electric chair. A last minute stay halted a prior sentence, but insanity claims were rejected yesterday. If carried out, Shanks would be the third to die in the county's chair. He studied at Northwestern last summer and was tied to Peoria Illinois.
About 175 Steinite radio dealers from eastern towns gather at 6 p.m. in the Gold room of the Hotel President for a sales convention sponsored by Repass Automobile Co local Steinite distributor. Mayor Glenn A. Tibbitts delivers the welcoming address. Fred W. Stein president of Steinite Laborables Co of Chicago attends with three associates. other company representatives include O R Cablentz George Walsh and Silas Roberts. Stein is the inventor of the first electric radio marketed.
Laner C. Bell was elected exalted ruler of Waterloo lodge No. 290 at last night’s meeting to succeed Burr G. Towne who was chosen as delegate for the grand lodge session next summer. Nominations were made two weeks ago and the officers to be installed at the first April meeting include Johnson Marsan Guagy Moore Harwich Miller Gass Laird Northey DeGon Alberti and others.
Cedar Falls mourns Mrs. William A. Ritchie of 910 Lincoln Street known for her skill in training birds and lore. The Courier Special Service confirms the death on March 7.
Mrs Ritchie had an aviary on the upper floor of her residence where she kept many birds and was known to bird lovers in the area. Her husband survives.
