National Guard Troops Next to Be Sent to France
Des Moines March 7 Officers at Camp Dodge believe the North Dakota involvement not in the February 23 call will go to Camp Dodge in April. About 8,000 North Dakota men remain to report under the first draft. Quarters for more men will open when the Forty second artillery regiments and base ordnance depot unit depart, likely later. National guard troops in training nationwide will precede Camp Dodge troops to France, with some predicting Dodge forces may not depart until next fall. Two new Iowa guard units to be inspected by Major Carlare of the Fortieth Infantry. Battery A Burlington March 11 and Company B Sioux City March 13. With these two, six units will be in the state. Red Cross nurse Rachael E. Campbell at Camp Dodge says a drive seeks 40,000 nurses for Red Cross service. there are 100,000 registered nurses in the U.S. and only 6,000 in army service. It is estimated 40,000 nurses will be needed in the next year. Camp Dodge men are training intensely, with few seen on Des Moines streets besides weekends, and midweek half holidays have not been allowed recently.
