Hands Off of Carmens Fight Ends City Patrol Involvement

Chief E A Leighton ordered patrolmen to stop intervening in the long running dispute between hackmen and transfer lines at passenger depots unless riots occur. The ruling followed the acquittal of Earl Brainard of the Bradley Transfer company on charges of loud noisy interference with passengers at the C station. Brainard was arraigned with judge Meyers releasing him after testimony. The case alleged a formal agreement to stay near vehicles and Brainard violated it by appearing in uniform and soliciting business on the platform. The dispatch notes ongoing warfare between transfer lines and past ordinance allowing railroad authorities to designate stands for hacks and transfer wagons. The chief’s order shifts enforcement to railroad officers.
