Protest Against Freight Increase Widens Across Iowa

Protesters in central Iowa and Chicago shippers oppose a railroad plan to raise freight on sheet metal products from 14 to 20 cents per carload. Hearings before the Interstate Commerce Commission have drawn comments from G Q Huntley of Cutler Hardware and W D Burdick of Associated Manufacturers. The rates exclude Mississippi and Missouri river cities and eastern metal centers, prompting a united Midwest stance against curtailing interregional shipments. Patriotism and war sentiment color the discussions, while a Chicago theater incident highlights public reaction.
