Seed corn disinfection myths debunked by Iowa State study
Ames Iowa March 1 hundreds of Iowa farmers are misled into thinking commercial seed corn disinfectants can salvage poor seed. Plant pathologists at Iowa State College report four years of tests show no disinfectant boosts yields of diseased or healthy seed, though some improve moldy kernels. A practical method is a rag doll tester to remove dead or moldy ears, with healthy seed yielding about five bushels more per acre than untreated seed.
