Ford and Sweden Seek Oil Alternatives as Petroleum Probes Rise
The Ford Motor Company of Canada says it is developing a process to extract motor fuel from shale and leave a high heating-value residue, promising a potential boon for motorists. Swedish expert Axel Enstrom notes shale oil and wood alcohol as substitutes, with Sweden's shale deposits capable of yielding 500 million tons and wood alcohol capacity up to 17 million gallons annually, while water power and coal by products also hold promise for energy security amid dwindling petroleum supplies. Pennsylvania New York New Jersey governors plan joint power development to harness water power and create interconnected transmission to meet large loads across states. The piece highlights sun power as an alternative, citing an automatic solar engine in California that concentrates sun rays to produce steam power.
