Des Moines reports county conventions nominating party candidates while many districts fail to name state representatives and senators. Republicans and Democrats alike miss nominations in Adams Shelby Dubuque Bremer and multiple other counties.
Creston Iowa June 29 Union county will have no Democratic ticket this year as Attorney General Hayner said no party can nominate at county convention or by county committees for county offices unless a candidate who ran in the primary received 10 percent of the vote. Democrats had no primary candidates, so nominations cannot be made and only Republican and independent tickets remain.
The Wythian Lodge of Vinton plans a Tuesday evening program featuring a memorial for Bernard Murphy former grand chancellor. The event includes a gavel presentation by E A Murphy, music by local artists, and an unveiling of Murphy portraits. Also noted is J F Ball and D AcMasters among speakers and performers.
In Independence Iowa draft changes affect Buchanan County with 41 men moved to Class 1 and facing call. Des Moines confronts Gov. Harding with a perplexing adjutant general issue. Logan, made a major in aviation, may not have a place in that service, while Lasher is expected to take over July 1, leaving Harding with two generals and one legal position. Logan plans to stay until posted. Lasher has moved to govern in readiness.
The Red Cross field secretary Miss Eileen Dougherty visited Delaware county chapters to review conditions and propose territorial boundaries for home service. The meeting addressed war chest funding, committee roles, and the mix of male and female leadership among branch chairs and committee members.
Orvil Galve, 11, son of Nels Galve near Satre, Iowa, was killed while leading cattle to pasture. He looped a halter over his neck and tied the other end to a calf. The calf bolted, dragging him through the woods. His eight-year-old brother unbuckled the halter after the calf stopped, but Orvil died from a fractured skull and a badly mashed face.

H J Metcalf state director of the United States public service reserve has notified local enrollment agents of the pressing demand for 18 electricians 3 photographers 90 gas engine men 10 acetylene welders 10 wire workers 20 stenographers for home service 10 surveyors 10 transit men 20 bridge men 10 civil engineers 10 auto mechanics or chauffeurs 34 bridge foremen 10 bugiers 14 earth work foremen 83 railway section foremen 95 railway section hands 17 track foremen and 1 men in some other lines.
A promotional notice praising Chamberlains Cough Remedy for children with coughs and colds. It claims prompt efficacy, no opium or narcotics, and a pleasant taste.
A Paris rumor claimed Carl Chapman was dead, but a June letter to a Minneapolis brother suggested only hope. The Chapmans doubt it, noting Carl fell in a quiet sector and expect confirmation. Washington issued an official death notice with a marked grave, and Mr. Chapman seeks German confirmation of burial details.
A special car with four cows from standard dairy breeds may visit Waterloo during the Dairy Cattle congress to be auctioned for the Red Cross. Successful bidders receive a temporary ownership certificate, cows to be sold again at other venues. After Waterloo the herd goes to Columbia for the national dairy show. EB Estes reports strong cattle entries and expects this year to match 1917 show levels, with Holstein displays expected to be notable.
Seven boys formed a junior fair association and held a fair with seven stands and an exhibition booth. Admission cost three cents, five cents for a season ticket, or one cent per stand. Gate receipts plus a $2.50 Red Cross collection totaled 13.15 dollars. They plan another fair in a few months.
The public library will close daily at 8 p m except Saturdays. It will close at noon each Friday for the remainder of the day and all day Sunday. Hours: Monday to Thursday 9 a m to 6 p m, Friday 9 a m to noon, Saturday 9 a m to 9 p m. Children’s department: Monday to Thursday 10 a m to noon and 2 p m to 5 p m, Friday 10 a m to noon, Saturday 10 a m to noon and 3 p m to 8 p m.
Mrs. Mary Nelson of 1320 Commercial Street reports a letter from her son Earles P Nelson, wounded in Scotland aboard the Manley after a collision on March 19. A West High graduate, he served in wireless naval work after Harvard training, lost an arm and sustained severe injuries, but has reached a recuperative stage in the American hospital in Scotland.
A vintage drugstore advertisement promotes Zemo for eczema pimples blackheads blotches and ring worm claiming a clear healthy skin. It lists prices 35 cents for standard and 1.00 for extra large bottle and describes Zemo as a clean penetrating antiseptic liquid from The E. W. Rose Co. Cleveland Ohio.
A May 20 letter from a wounded serviceman in an American hospital reports slow recovery after injuries. He plans to be home as soon as Sept and mentions brother Roy leaving for Chicago for training and a Waterloo acquaintance, Russ Stewart, likely to meet in Scotland. The item also cites a booklet noting 11,000,000 non fatal injuries yearly and promotes Chamberlains Liniment for sprains and rheumatic pains.
