Happy Go Lucky club hosts evening of games and mischief

Miss Vera and Nellie Campbell hosted the Happy Go Lucky club on Vermont street with green and white decor, piano selections by Myrtle Cook and Hilda Moreland, a vacation theme booklet craft, and a gypsy fortune teller. A two course tray repast closed the gathering and a next meeting is planned at Miss Myrtle Cook’s home.

Patton Rejoins Boosters Ahead of Rock Island Return

Harry Patton, who joined the Boosters last spring and once pitched winning ball, will rejoin the squad under Manager Boyle at Rock Island next Tuesday. He explains a rules lapse led to his release, says he learned his lesson, and is willing to meet any condition for another Waterloo try. Patton notes his six straight wins last year and hopes to win more now that fans welcome his comeback.

Electrical Strike Not Yet Settled Ends Pending Talks

A report circulating yesterday claimed the electrical workers strike against the Corn Ball Telephone Company was settled, but union officials deny it. Company managers plan to present a proposal to the strikers on Monday morning. if accepted, workers will return.

Heat in Chicago Kills Four People

An oppressively hot day in Chicago left four people dead and many prostrations. The city sweltered with temperatures in the nineties and set a June heat record, with 94 degrees recorded at 11 a.m. on June 22, the hottest since 1994. Prostrations increased hour by hour as the heat persisted.

Double shooting ends week s spree in Chicago

John W. Carlin proprietor of a nation store at 1049 Grand avenue shot his wife Louise twice in the deck and then killed himself with a forehead shot. Both were seriously injured. Carlin had beaten her after a drunken spree that began Monday. He had warned of getting a gun before returning Thursday night and opening fire.

City Council approves 5 percent business district property raise

A Waterloo council as board of equalization raised business district property valuations by 5 percent. The measure affects portions of East Park Avenue, East Fourth Street, West Park Avenue, and nearby streets in East and West Waterloo. A July 11 hearing will allow affected owners to explain objections, with exemptions for the courthouse Masone temple and Odd Fellows building.

George Moody to Sing at Y M C A Men’s Meeting

George Moody evangelist, teamed with Oscar Lowry of Cedar Falls, will sing at the Y M C A men’s meeting tomorrow at 4 pm. Rev C R Lowe will speak on Christianity an Exact Science. Meetings move to park venues starting in July. Personal Workers League held a shop meeting at Illinois Central shops with testimonies and Mrs St Elmo Bateman singing, five weekly sessions drawing interest.

Reward Offered For Missing Bay Gelding In Cedar Rapids

Sheriff Shoren reports a Cedar Rapids police card describing a valuable bay gelding that is missing or stolen. The horse has a white forehead stripe, left hind foot white, a trimmed foretop, a short, full arched neck, weighs about 1100 pounds and is seven years old. A general reward is offered for recovery.

Death toll rises as Waterloo families mourn

Mrs. Martin Grady of Waterloo dies at home after eight years of illness. Born Lydia Martin Grady in Somerset county Pa on November 14 1838 she moved with her husband to Waterloo in 1865 where they raised ten children four of whom survive. Funeral at Elmwood Cemetery. Mrs Kern summoned dies after Brights disease at Presbyterian Hospital born Charlotta Green May 8 1859 in Omro Wisconsin. Survived by husband Nicholas Kern six children and three brothers. Funeral Sunday at 2 p m from 827 Fourth street west with burial at Elmwood. Miss Nellie Genevieve Ayers daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Ayers dies of tuberculosis at 20 after four months illness. Born January 3 1892 in Gratiot Wisconsin she moved to Waterloo three years ago and worked at Paul Davis Dry Goods. Survived by parents three sisters and two brothers. Funeral in Gratiot with Catholic rites. Infant dies at two days old of unknown cause. burial at Elmwood. Indictment Returned Against 14 Lumber Secretaries

Chicago June 24 Indictments charging fourteen secretaries of lumber associations with conspiracy in restraint of trade were returned by the grand jury before Judge Landis. The action targets the lumber secretaries bureau of information in Chicago and represents 2,900 retail lumber concerns across the midwest northwest southwest and Pacific coast. Elwood G. Godmar said not all firms could be indicted, so charges focus on their representatives.

Desertion charge against 16 year marriage in Des Moines

Fake prize fight and Madge trial in Suburban Island

Davenport June 24. Before 1000 Tri-City businessmen the Tri-City Press club staged a fake prize fight at Suburban Island between a 135 pound white prospect and a 215 pound opponent Jack Duncan. Referee Charles P Skinner millionaire plow manufacturer ex mayor Moline was arrested after ruling the white man winner and later found not guilty by a hastily assembled mock court and jury.
