Convicts Surrounded After Prison Break in Madisonville

About 35 long term white convicts escaped Ferguson state prison near Madisonville and fled into the Trinity river valley. Madison County volunteers and guards converged along thickets by the river, pursuing on foot as guards report no weapons and dogs expected to track them. Fugitives cut phone lines, bunkhouse walls, and headed toward a ferry on the Trinity river before being surrounded by authorities.

Fort Des Moines to Train 800 Iowa Youths This Summer

Des Moines June 22 More than 800 Iowa young men will attend the Citizens Military Training Camp at Fort Des Moines in July with 80 reserve officers in active duty for 15 days. An estimated 1,650 will be in attendance this year, distributed between Fort Des Moines and Fort Crook Omaha and other posts in the Army Corps area.

Des Moines based Tony The Wop alias Frank Perelle seen by theatre owner I H Ruben as one of two bandits who stole 15000 dollars in jewels from Minneapolis on April 10. Fire Claims Four In Back Bay Mansion Blaze

Boston dispatch reports a deadly Back Bay fire at W. L. Shearer’s residence killing two debutantes Janet Shearer and Betty Howes, a maid Alice Scott, and maid Helen McLaughlin. Liquor raid leads to arraignment for Beard in Millerdale

Holdups proved to be Buchanan's sheriff and men

Sheriff Harry R. Willey of Buchanan county and deputies said an attempted holdup near Waterloo at Independence edge was by officers, not highwaymen. The Bopps reported four to five shots, but Willey said only two shots went into the air. The fleeing car carried liquor, a man and woman escaped, and officers avoided shooting the suspects.

Obituary of Johanna Brundidge Barnes in Waterloo

Mrs. L. J. Barnes 19 died this morning at 327 Seventh Street West after eight weeks with dropsy. Johanna Dorothy Brundidge born November 25 1907 in Tama County Iowa was the only child of F. P. and Mrs. Brundidge. She moved to Waterloo sixteen years ago and married L. J. Barnes December 5 1926 at Elmhurst Illinois. Survived by husband and parents. Cable adds two planes to outfit at a sport here

John W. Cable, local aviator on the Hudson road, will travel to Cedar Rapids Thursday to acquire a Waco Nine, a three seat bi plane for passenger use near Waterloo this summer. A second Waco Ten, similar to the Nine, is due by July 4. Herbert McKahin of Campbell DeSchepper Airplane Co. will pilot the current plane while Cable flies the new ship. Lansing Kansas June 22 4P State penitentiary officials ordered continued hunger cure for 328 convicts who barricaded themselves in the coal mine as a protest over cigarette access. Fourteen guards held by the mutineers faced hunger as authorities warned the standoff would end only when the prisoners yielded.

National Adjutant of American Legion to Arrive Tomorrow

James F. Barton national adjutant of the American Legion and Mrs Barton will arrive in Waterloo for a short visit with Mr and Mrs George H Crowl at 1495 Fourth street west. Barton travels from Indianapolis where national headquarters are located and recently returned from Paris after planning the Legion meeting there next September. He was Iowa state adjutant before becoming national adjutant.

Drew Near Death as Arthritis Strikes Actor

John Drew, veteran actor, grew weaker with rising temperature in San Francisco. Doctor Lawrence Hoffman said the actor’s illness is the sole hope for recovery. Drew was seized by arthritis in Portland, Oregon, and brought to the city for treatment.
