Private Cars Cut Iowa Passenger Train Use in 1926
Des Moines June 22 AP Passenger revenue of Iowa railroads fell from 1924 to 1926 and railroads carried far fewer passengers. BoM Richardson, Iowa Railroad Commission member, cites greater private automobile use for intrastate travel as a key factor and notes many passenger train miles declined due to branch line discontinuances and schedule cuts. He studies motor carrier value and says fewer than one third of passenger trains turn a profit amid high costs and road conditions. The commission aims to develop bus service on a basis of necessity and economic feasibility, not overdevelopment.
