Outlook Favorable for Buchanan Co Road Bond Issue

Independence Iowa June 14 sentiment in Buchanan county favors a 1.2 million bond to hard surface primary highways with voters to decide June 23. The board of supervisors reports the plan to build a subway at Fifth Avenue Northeast Illinois Central crossing with railway officials willing to help. Several accidents occurred at this crossing, but the subway will wait until grading draining and paving of primary No 11 between the city and the north county line.

Leaders Arrive at Oelwein for Boy Scout Camp

Many northeastern Iowa Scout officials are already in Oelwein for a regional camp. Traer High School Costs Detailed in Annual Report

Traer Iowa June 14 The year’s report by Superintendent S W Christian shows instructional cost per pupil at 6 73 monthly for all students and 4 74 for those below ninth grade The school enrolled 478 pupils 241 boys 217 girls with 38 in the graduating class and 21 full time teachers plus three part time The average salary for grade teachers was 124 62 monthly with male high school teachers at 183 88 and female at 160 07 per month

Fish Disease Hits Manchester Hatchery Trout

A government fish hatchery two miles east of Manchester, Ja, reports a sudden epidemic killing 1200 of 2000 trout in one eight inch tank. Parasites and algae are blamed. salt is used as a preventive. Experts from Washington studied a similar outbreak years ago. Local fishermen are catching surviving fish from the spring branch, though they are wary of catching the sick.

Child Attacked by Pet Dog Now Out of Danger

Hampton Iowa June 14 Sherwood Hansen four year old Courter child was attacked by a German police dog near his home. The dog bit a three inch scalp wound and tore the left ear. He is now out of immediate danger after treatment at Lutheran hospital with wounds cleaned sewn and anti tetanus serum administered.

Truck Driver Crushed By Tractor Pole Accident

Albert Miller, driver for Standard Oil of La Porte, was seriously injured when his truck rolled into a pole and then into another, trapping him between the cab and the pole. The accident occurred in front of the Lloyd J Lamb residence and the full extent of injuries was not known at the time.

Bremer County to vote on 900000 road bond issue

Waverly Iowa June 14 The Bremer county bond proposal calls for 900000 to finance hard surfacing on routes 93 58 Tripoli to Sumner 59 Black Hawk to north 10 from Butler to Fayette via Waverly and other segments including Janesville and Plainfield. Voters will decide June 23.

Janesville Honors Founders of Eastern Star Anniversary

Water witches aid locating Manchester well site

Water witches were used to locate Manchester Iowa's new city well with a test drill planned to 250 feet or less before the main bore on the Prospect and Union lot. Barber and Schenk civil engineers supervised the study, Sanford Lyman operated the divining method, and officials expect abundant groundwater at the chosen high spot east of the river.

DeWolf Named Head of Road Boosters in Grundy County

Sherman A DeWalf was unanimously appointed chairman of an organization formed at a public meeting in the Masonic hall Reinbeck to promote the June 21 election over a $600,000 road bond issue. The plan calls for paving from Reinbeck west to seven miles west of Grundy Center and then south to the Marshall county line. Several committees were named to lead the promotion effort.

Hundred Fifty Rotarians Enjoy Fish Breakfast

One hundred fifty Waterloo and Waverly Rotarians traveled to Rotary Reserve north of Cedar Falls for their annual fish breakfast featuring fried pike boiled potatoes cantaloupe bacon coffee and doughnuts. George Shoemaker Roy Binnard led a large local crew preparing the meal with overnight duty. Carleton Sias acted as head bus boy with his Walters team. Nell Jackson served on the organizing committee. The Waverly Rotarians were the sole guests at the event.
