Bear Steals Baby in Lyon Cabin Horror of 1845
The Lyon family of Clayton and Allamakee counties recounts an 1845 incident when a bear entered the cabin, seized six month old G. M. Lyon Jr., and was driven off as dogs and mother cried for help. The bear was killed nearby and the family later built a wool mill, with earnings from quail, sheep herding, and steers funding the new home. The narrative recalls frontier thrills from wildlife, floods, and early settler life, including hunting, honey gathering, and vast game in the woods and prairies.
