Funeral for Pvt Wagoner Sunday Receives Full Military Honors
Westley Clyde Wagoner, son of Mrs. Carl Wilkin of 25 Fremont Street, will be laid to rest Sunday at Fairview with full military honors. His body arrived from Hoboken via Chicago and was taken to Peterson Bros. undertaking parlors. The 2 p.m. chapel service precedes a 2:30 p.m. funeral at Walnut Street Baptist Church, followed by a procession to Fairview where a legion squad will fire a salute. Wagoner died May 4, 1918 on the Marne while serving as a messenger for Maj. Carl in Co. I, 128th Infantry after enlisting in Detroit in 1917. Previously employed at the Iowa Dairy Separator plant, he was a blood relative of President Harding, his mother being a first cousin. At Fairview, his body will be placed at the foot of a monument his mother had erected about a year ago, a brown stone near the mausoleum bearing the tale of his service and death.
