Branch banks urged as safer, larger units favored
Washington June 9 Vice Gov Platt of the Federal Reserve Board urged wider use of branch banking as the safer option for depositors and communities. He cited ongoing small bank failures, six to eight weekly, totaling 274 since January, and said small independents fail to serve agricultural areas. He argued larger branches can spread risk, provide better management, and carry New York accounts, noting activity across major centers.
