Picking Winners From Race Herds Mostly a Gamble

John E. Madden, a leading figure in American horse racing, argues that selecting young horses is largely a gamble. He bred Sir Barton, later a Derby, Preakness, and Withers winner, and sold him for 15 000 as a yearling. Madden recalls offering 50 000 to Commander Ross after the colt’s early success, but Ross declined. He notes Sir Barton’s exceptional talent and notes jockey Loftus’s high praise, while recognizing Madden’s own misgivings about predicting greatness.
