Brewer Motorbus Route Fight Before Iowa Rail Directors

Mrs. Helen Schultz Brewer, owner of a Waterloo to Mason City motorbus line, contends to state railroad commissioners that a parallel service would be confiscatory and harm her business which began in 1922. She urged the commission to deny new lines through Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Mason City and surrounding towns, citing profits reinvested in newer buses and the need to serve students and those lacking private transport. The hearing examined tax issues, pavement needs, and the impact on towns along the W C F N route. the commission will decide later.

The Rock Island lines now operate automatic train control covering about 337 miles with 564 track miles total, the greatest such mileage claimed. The system spans Blue Island to Des Moines across two divisions, with 146 locomotives equipped. It limits speed under caution to 30 mph for passengers and 25 mph for freights, and 15 mph under stop signals, with automatic brake control.
