Are you a snob and a democracy of the heart
Ruth Cameron reflects on snobbery and true democracy in society through Maud Radford Warren’s tale of a refined woman forced to work as a clerk in a democratic town. She admits to concealed snobbish thoughts, praising democracy while fearing its reach into personal judgments. The piece ends noting a long-ago improvised marriage that Chicago lovers tried to regularize after a Catholic Church denial.
