Many Hardships Attend Exchange of Populations
Athens June 4 The forced exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey has uprooted families and created widespread suffering. More than 100,600 Muslims have moved to Turkey and about 150,000 Greeks remain to be relocated from Asia Minor, with 300,000 Muslims and 150,000 Greeks still to move. The Lausanne mixed commission, with Turkish Greek and neutral members, oversees the process and American Near East Relief aids, supervising exchanges and civilian prisoners. Tensions arise in Macedonia and western Thrace as refugees clash with local Muslims, while many Constantinople Greeks claim restitution of homes seized after the Smyrna catastrophe. The overall task remains immense, with harsh conditions for new arrivals and inadequate shelter and fuel.
