Four Crops Raised on Ground at Same Time for Pork Production
Dunkerton Iowa July 30 Charles Eldridge reports four crops grown together on one field for hog feeding. An 11 acre corn field planted May 7 10 with acid phosphate fertilizer shows tall stalks with two to three ears per plant and heavy potential yield. Rape soybeans pumpkins and later planted corn accompany the crop with expected harvest by Sept 1. Eldridge plans to rotate in spring shoots and allow pigs to feed on rape soybeans and pumpkins. He notes another 23 acre field of corn planted a week later is rapidly gaining on the earlier plot due to a full fertilizer mix. Pigs provide a major income with fall farrowings already underway. Potatoes, grown on about three acres, yield sorted new potatoes sold to St Francis hospital Waterloo at 2 dollars a bushel down from prior 2.85. Oats are light but barley yields look strong and threshing season nears with local rigs preparing to start next week.
