War veteran beaten by I W Ws in Sioux City incident
Joe Smith, a WW veteran and conductor for Service company lines, was badly beaten on July 17 by I W W members at the Fourth Street viaduct. They demanded money, displayed an I W W card, mocked him, and tried to force him to join. He escaped after police arrived and has since returned to work fully recovered. He warned Councilman Mann that more assaults occurred that day and public safety was ignored.
