Origin of Mormon Fly Revealed by Bridge Workman

Fort Madison Iowa July 25 INS origin of the Mormon fly revealed as engineers dislodged a two foot deep mass of larvae from the river bottom during bridge work. Hydraulics brought the hatching swarms to the surface creating black clouds that swept streets and homes. Workers feared abandoning the project but a favorable breeze redirected the swarms. A colored sand hog reported the discovery to the chief engineer. Scientists found more deposits of larvae elsewhere in the river bottom and plan extermination methods without harming fish. Reports from other districts indicate widespread infestations prompting a regional campaign to target breeding places once identified.
