Foundations Piers in Waterloo Build Near Fourth and Commercial
The Hawkeye Building company undertakes a difficult foundation for the Paul Davis Dry Goods building at Fourth and Commercial, Waterloo. John G. Miller Construction reports 32 footings 36 to 43 feet deep, on solid rock, with extensive quicksand and water pockets requiring caissons and dry sand cement fillings. The work reveals rock ledges and unpredictable soil, testing concrete versus rock resilience.

Massive Hawkeye Building Foundation Nears Completion
Workmen laid a deep foundation for the Hawkeye building with rugged street retaining walls 256 feet long, 13 feet high, two feet eight inches thick at the base. The Rialto theater leaned eight inches over the silo and required careful shoring without accidents. Engineers expect the foundation to cost about 30,000 dollars, about 20 percent of total structure cost, and to be out of sight yet lasting through the ages. The new structure will rise to a greater height once enclosed.
