Pioneer James Newell Helped Indians and Neighbors
James Newell, early settler at Turkey Foot Forks in Washington and Union townships, from Belmont County Ohio, 1809 to 187?, fostered friendships with Winnebago and Pottawattamie tribes, fed the hungry, buried Indian chiefs, and faced local censure for his land dealings and close ties with Native peoples. He fathered 16 children and kept a detailed record of his life and beliefs, living by the maxim Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
