Coal Drives Ohio Land Values Higher in Mining Boom
S M Bentley reports western Ohio coal mining surge has sharply raised land values with some farms selling coal rights for up to 500 per acre. He notes three coal veins exist, nonmetal mines mostly nonunion while drift mines employ unions, with strike actions since April 2. Wages for cutters reach 500 monthly, loaders 250, daily unskilled workers seven dollars, causing overmanning, layoffs, and farm help shortages as miners seek steady pay. Operators urged to match labor to production needs to stabilize the industry.
