Rapid City July 15. Two presidential party photographers James Lillis of Boston and Russell Atkins of Philadelphia survived a narrow crash on a mountain road while following President Coolidge. Lillis sustained facial and wrist injuries with fifteen stitches. Atkins was shaken but unhurt. They steered their car into a pillar to avoid colliding with a White House vehicle, a risky move noted by Major James Coupal, the presidential physician.

Insane man swap led to Augusta misidentification
In Saco Maine on July 15 a bizarre telegram from the state asylum to Waterboro officials claimed an insane man had been sent and to take custody. A Waterboro deputy escorted a farmer to Augusta, where the man proved sane, the deputy was jailed in a padded cell, and the real lunatic remained in the office. A selectman later identified the farmer as the insane man and freed the deputy, who vowed to avoid such duties again.
