Star of Bailey Waning in Senate

Washington July 13 The star of Joseph Weldon Bailey as the intellectual leader of the senate democracy is waning. He is no longer permitted to speak unchallenged and his role as spokesman is being repudiated. Bailey is seen now as one of the Texas senators expressing his own views, with support dwindling to Simmons of North Carolina and Thornton of Louisiana. The three were mocked as The Three Musketeers with Bailey as Athos. The Lorimer case last winter marked the first serious blow to his leadership as only ten Democrats voted with him to retain the Illinois boss in the senate.
