History of state full of romance in Iowa mining life
Des Moines July 10 Critics praise Julian Dubuque as Iowa’s first settler whose lead mines near Dubuque shaped state history. John C Parish writes in Palimpses that Dubuque remained a permanent white settler from 1758 to 1810, with Spanish support and alliances with the Sac and Fox. His grave atop a hill overlooks the Mississippi, and his mines influenced Iowa’s great seal and early state development.
