Peace Officers to Be Combined in State Bank Protection

An Iowa program unites peace officers and bankers to form a state bank protection bureau directed by the governor. A $37,500 state agent fund will finance operations with Des Moines headquarters and joint backing from the bankers' association. Rewards of $500 are posted for burglars who dynamited the Farmers Savings Bank at Wallingford and for robbers who seized cash, bonds, and notes from the Roslings Bank in Clay County.

Rattlesnake Bites Small Child Three Times In Rural Indiana

Slava Padovich, three and a half, is in St Joseph hospital three miles west of Centerville Indiana after a rattlesnake bit his leg in the garden three times. A letter from a former associate at the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association in Honolulu describes rising sugar prices and lavish bonus payments. Unskilled laborers reportedly earn 41 to 520 percent bonuses monthly, with some fan gang leaders making up to 3500 per month. Skilled workers on Ewa and Wailua receive full bonuses. Boo heeperes and others earn 1000 to 1500 dollars monthly with large bonus proportions.

The Courier from July 7 1870 describes Waterloo’s Fourth of July celebration when the town of about 4000 marked Independence Day with a sunrise salute, a parade led by Marshal Case and assistants, cigarmakers at work on a float, and a large, orderly crowd. Evening fireworks drew 5000 and a Lincoln Hall dance closed the day.
