Des Moines July 2 Tommy Ryan veteran pugilist and local boxing promoter has been appointed boxing instructor at Camp Funston Kan He began a course under Mike Gibbons boxing director at Camp Dodge in preparation for new duties Ryan reaches Camp Funston about July 10.
Des Moines reports the Nonpartisan League renewing efforts in Iowa after recent successes in North Dakota. An outdoor meeting near Oskaloosa in Mahaska County drew county defense officials who allowed the event while observing. The state council debates loyalty to the league and its possible alliance with the Socialist party to grow strength, potentially pressuring Republicans and Democrats to unite to curb this third party. Local readers doubt the league’s Iowa following as farmers show limited grievances and support.
Des Moines July 2 state secret service men investigate Rev Mr Biautuss pastor of a German church at Denver Bremer county. The minister and his congregation are reported to the state defense council as taking a defiant stance toward Gov Harding language proclamation. He reportedly said he will take up arms to defend his constitutional right to preach in German.
Ames July 2. Miss Neta Snook Ames only woman aviator departs midweek for Elmira N Y to join the Royal Flying corps of the British Aeronautical cognizance in a government position. She finished flying at the Curtiss school Newport News Va and returned to Ames six weeks ago as private flying was forbidden. She may serve as inspector or instructor in her new post.
At a Manchester Iowa meeting the Commercial club voted to respond to Gov Harding's call for funds to provide athletic equipment for the men in the new era encampment. The group closed their star parade at midnight and prepared floats for the Fourth, with announcements urging readiness by 10 a.m. A brief note honors former president M Cloud and features remarks from J Phenicie who thanked the club for friendship and shared his willingness to enlist, planning to return after the war. Also: Lloyd Jones and Lillian Fleming wed recently in Manchester and will reside in San Francisco after visiting Chicago.
George Millen, a farmer northwest of Clarksville, Indiana, found a silk bag containing a card dropped from a United States war balloon. The card urged helping the government and returning it to the United States Army Balloon School with the date and hour filled out, and Millen mailed it to the Fort Omsha command at Fort Omaha, Nebraska.
Thieves entered the W. A. Tidball & Son department store between closing Saturday and opening Monday and stole about $1,000 worth of silk, 30 bolts priced 86 cents to $1.85 per yard, plus three inferior bolts, three news suitcases. German American Patriotic association sends invitations to about 125 German pastors in Iowa urging loyalty Sunday observances in churches. The Des Moines meeting will feature prominent speakers backing the government. Included with the invitation is Louis Block of Davenport letter denouncing Kaiser and warning of Germany’s war worship and military obsession.
On a down grade near the West Fork Stream a gasoline car with a barrel of water tipped, throwing about a dozen men. Foreman Sorenson suffered three broken ribs, Howard Davis a severe forehead gash and possible nasal fracture, another man’s leg was crushed, Henry Abbon had a grievous facial wound needing 26 stitches, and George Hanawalt was knocked unconscious. One worker reached safety, others were brought back to town. the scene ended with the car returning to the track.
Sheridan Haynes, an employee of Cave & Sproul Lumber, was trapped when his car overturned on a country road. He freed himself by digging away earth from under the vehicle, relieving pressure and allowing rescue by Mrs. C. Bragg and others. He suffered a broken collar bone and several bruises.
Des Moines July 2. Dwight N. Lewis chairman of the state board of railroad commissioners reports renewed assurance from Director Prouty representing General McAdoo that Iowa classification governs all intrastate business in Iowa. The 25 percent increases apply to Iowa rates, while minimum rates from McAdoo’s order apply both in Iowa and other states. Lewis had warned Washington that tariffs nullified Iowa classification, and Prouty replied that town classification governs intrastate business and any contrary tariffs will be corrected immediately.
Des Moines reports that Camp Dodge may observe the Fourth as a holiday for the eighty-eighth division. About 1,200 soldiers plus the headquarters cavalry will take part in a patriotic program at Drake Stadium on the Fourth morning. Captain John Grisfith, division athletic director, arranged transport for all non cavalry men by motor trucks, needing over 100 trucks. Some soldiers may depart later.
