Why Tabernacle Project Failed in Independence
A Independence gentleman denied local businessmen opposed erecting a tabernacle for Stephens Bros evangelists merely due to antipathy to meetings. He said plans to keep meetings only a few weeks made heating and construction costly, suggesting the armory could host crowds with less expense. A Presbyterian pastor announced meetings would move to a more favorable season. Reports from Jesup claimed business opposition due to saloon concerns, which he denied.
