Renewed fight for passage of Iowa income tax law

Des Moines January 20. A renewed effort to enact a state income tax law for Iowa was in prospect today led by Senator George W Patterson and Representative Francis Johnson with support from colleagues. The proposed bill closely follows the previous measure defeated in the Forty-second General Assembly. It would tax income above 3500 for married and 1500 for single filers, with 400 exemptions per dependent child, and set rates up to 6 percent beyond 5000. An exemption of 3 percent would apply to property used productively. Revenue would be split 50 percent to the general fund and 46 percent to school funds. The bill could be introduced today, though minor changes may delay action until tomorrow.
