Woman Redeems Quarter Century Promise in Silver to Gold
London A promise made 235 years ago has just been redeemed by Lady Pender of Donhead Wilts at her golden wedding. In 1892 she gave threepenny pieces to local children with a pledge to exchange for half sovereigns at the next major anniversary. Nearly thirty recipients returned the coins at the golden jubilee this year and each received the promised half sovereign. Lady Pender gilded the threepence pieces and formed them into a necklace as a keepsake.
