British Steamer Durward Sunk by German Submarine
The British steamer Durward of 1300 tons, built in 1895 and owned by G. Gibson & Co of Leith, was torpedoed by German submarine U-19 about 22 miles off the Maas lightslip while sailing from Leith to Rotterdam. The crew were saved, taken to Rotterdam by a Dutch pilot boat. The ship carried 46 tons of American relief supplies. The incident fuels talk of a German naval policy to starve England.
