Coal Operators Admit 100 Percent Price Increase Claim

J D A Morrow vice president of the National Coal Operators Association told the Senate Manufacturers Committee that there was perhaps a 100 percent price increase to consumers in some West Virginia mines last summer. He said reports of high coal prices and operator profits were greatly exaggerated, citing 35 or 36 cents per ton profit for the first nine months of 1920 and a mine price of 3.47 per ton with costs at 2.76. He blamed the April switchmen’s strike and transport ties for the coal shortage and denied exports caused the domestic squeeze.
