Tama County Taxes Double In 10 Years

A reader compares Tama County taxes over ten years showing a near doubling from 1908 to 1918 with total levies rising from 245 128 to 744 459 including state county township and city taxes plus auto tax. Schools roads and bridges claim over half of the 1918 levy though rural schools have declined. Dog tax remains relatively small with slight increases.

Police in Council Bluffs and nearby towns chase a gang of card sharks said to ply a clever scam on poker players. An advance agent sells merchants high quality cards, then traveling men ingratiate themselves to gain access to marked decks. The scheme allegedly leads to a killer blow for players like Ned Oak, who reportedly lost two dollars to the sharks.

Hampton Physician Under Surgeon's Knife

Dr J Ci Powe of Hampton underwent gall stones, gallbladder, and appendix removal at Luthemn hospital, performed by Dr C F Osborne and assistants. One gall stone reportedly as large as a jar, over 140 others removed. Operation, seven hours, anesthesia effects delayed recovery but expected to be favorable for the county and northern Town Local Talent Play. The Windsor theatre to present The Wishing King by local talent on Feb 6 and 7, sponsored by the local post of Leglor. Mrs J B Clark chairs the committee.

Mayner's Mine Busy Opens Coal Output Grows

Knoxville Iowa January 17 The Mammoth Vein mine has opened for hoisting and loading coal. About 75 tons were shipped the first day, with output at 145 tons daily. Sixty men are employed. An obitiuary was read and 46 girls in white, representing states ratifying, with three in black for those not, affiliated in the funeral ceremony. Interment occurred at midnight.
