Mount Everest summit effort fraught with breathing perils
London Jan 14 Major Hingston, medical officer on the last Everest expedition, cited breathing as the primary obstacle. At 27 000 feet Somervell needed seven to ten respirations per step and occasionally rested every 20 30 yards. At 28 000 feet Norton climbed 80 feet in an hour without oxygen. High altitude dulled will power and memory while favorable weather remained essential for any summit attempt.
