Washington Jan 14 The house ways and means committee heard testimony on the lumber and silk schedules of the tariff. Schedule D covers timber and related products with ad valorem duties up to 45 percent while Schedule L covers silk and related fabrics with duties as high as 50 percent for silk manufacture. Proponents urge removing lumber from the tariff to honor a pledge to put lumber on the free list, arguing the industry should not bear the burden of revenue needs.
