Speculation in Grain Futures Debate Moves Market View

Leslie F Gates, former president of the Chicago Board of Trade, told the House Agricultural Committee that the Copper Tinher grain futures bill would paralyze current marketing and lack an adequate substitute. He argued futures stabilize prices, facilitate distribution, and prevent monopoly, warning that removing the market would harm producers and drive small firms out as a few big concerns gain price influence. He urged constructive reform that strengthens, not destroys, the system.
