Ames Man Explains Increase in Insect Damage Thru State
Ames Iowa January 7 Insufficient food in prairie and pasture land is blamed for injurious insects affecting cultivated crops in Iowa for the past three years G O Hendrickson a graduate student of entomology reports. He has collected over 15000 insect specimens from prairie areas in Iowa including about ten varieties and found a link between insect variety and soil ground cover and vegetation. He hopes to apply his findings to guide control measures and prevent losses. Hendrickson identified several insects new to Iowa and two or three new species require scientific naming. He also catalogued prairie land remains locating country schoolyards and roadsides as original sod. It took two years to secure and identify the insects in his collection.
