Emphasis on Production Cost in Benton Co
Keystone, June George and Arthur Franzenburg received medals for each producing one ton of pork in 180 days with their son. Sons of Herman Franzenburg, they were in Benton county Ways and Girls pig club last year. Medals from the Duroc Jersey breed association acknowledge their work. Arthur fed 2,250 pounds of apples and George 2,050 pounds in the period. The McLean hog-raising system gains popularity in Benton county, aided by the county farm bureau. In 1928 and 1926 campaigns taught its basics, with about 400 farmers this year raising hogs under the plan. Heezen says the system halves swine costs and could save about 150 dollars per farmer, totaling around 69,000 dollars in county savings. Co-op livestock shipments and associations moved many hogs, with buyers receiving more by 80 cents per hundred due to the cooperative effort. The associations handled 1,000,000 dollars worth of hogs in 986, and shippers gained about 50,000 dollars from these savings.

Wand, veterinarian, determined postmortem that poisoning from a sclera stomach worm attack is to blame. Cases are uncommon in the region, but several have occurred this year, with prior losses reported last year.
