Iowa University on Paper Eight Years After Creation
A historical account notes that the University of Iowa existed on paper for eight years after its 1847 establishment. It opened in March 1855 with 124 students, faced faculty shortages, and suspended the collegiate department to conserve funds. Enrollment grew to surpass 2,000 by 1906 07, and today the campus spans over 300 acres with 60 buildings. The university comprises eight colleges, two divisions, and three schools, including journalism and music, nursing, and education. It pioneered child welfare research and offered radio correspondence for credit. The College of Iowa claims the oldest law school west of the Mississippi and an 18,000 current registrar’s count.
