Waterloo recorded its lowest 23 degrees below zero between 9 and 10 this morning with city thermometers showing 16 to 30 degrees below. Despite the severe chill, reports of distress were minimal as coal dealers worked to meet future needs and orders were filled in advance while forecasts expect warming in the next 24 hours.
A village of 5 000 in Grianvi, 50 miles north of the city, was swept by fire early today causing about 3300 000 in losses. The water supply failed due to an intake pipe stoppage, allowing the blaze to rage in the business area while a shift in wind spared the residential part. There were no deaths or injuries. The Crystal Theatre ran a show titled The Aeroplane during the period Thursday through Saturday.
