Century-old steam engine still in service at Illinois Central shops
A 70-year-old steam engine in the Illinois Central railroad system remains in service, housed in the hack shop. Built in a New York prison in 1854, it has seen limited modernizations and only minor repairs since 1900, including a governor, an off pump, and a crepe-marked repair note after a 10-year-ago crank pin issue.
