In a reflective verse by Edger A. Guest, an oak tree felled after the poet's steady care becomes a symbol of loneliness and pain. The speaker questions human guarantees about life, comparing mortal claims to the certainty of sun and rain and imagining the tree’s quiet sorrow. The poem critiques vanity and arrogance in man toward nature.
