Rock Island May Join Short Line Near Knoxville
Des Moines feb 23 report notes renewed interest in a Rock Island extension from Washington through Oskaloosa to Knoxville to link with the Kansas City short line. The 9 or 10 mile spur would cost about 350000 but may not shorten freight hauls to Kansas City or Des Moines as railroads trend toward reducing mileage.

The state board notes a 77.83 mile decrease in main track mileage as several routes are abandoned. The Muscatine Burling ton and Southern line with 2 mileage of 47.77 ends service while a buyer operates a switching service, with talk of full reestablishment later. Rock Island abandons the Mne from Stockton to Davenport 17.18 miles, and I and StL shows a 1048 mile drop with minor change Van Cleve to State Center due to remeasurements.

Mian Paunfully Hurt When Taxicab Strikes
Glenn Mendenhall of 145 Lincoln Street suffered painful injuries late last evening after stepping from behind street cars into the path of a taxicab driven by David Bender at Dane Street and Logan Avenue. He was rushed to Allen Memorial Hospital with scratches bruises and a painful right hip. No bones were broken and his condition improved today.
