Three measures affecting women before the assembly
In Des Moines on February 22 the Fortieth General Assembly considers three acts on women. The state aims to fund educative work for mothers with federal aid, while jarring bills on jury exemptions, factory work hours for women, and the age of majority await action. A constitutional amendment to allow women to sit in the legislature is delayed by a drafting error and must return to the House.

Origin of fire in Lafayette block remains puzzle
After an inspection of the Evans Self-Filling Pen factory on the Lafayette block's sixth floor investigators believe the blaze did not start there. They think the fire began in the attic or roof, burning downward as upper rooms and roof suffered the most damage while machinery and stock near the floor escaped. The factory had been locked for weeks and two clerks in the adjacent office were unaware of the fire until smoke entered. The center of the blaze was an open alcove outside the factory. City authorities report losses from water damage to Waterloo’s municipal courtroom on the third floor, with plastering fallen and furnishings soaked. Temporary roof work is underway while insurers adjust claims and the building awaits redecorating.
